This is why we are a climate-neutral company
The greenhouse gases caused by HPC AG are recorded and compensated. This makes us one of the first companies in our industry to voluntarily compensate for emissions.
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing mankind since the end of the Ice Age and is the defining issue of our time. The consequences of global warming are becoming more and more tangible and the demands on politicians and companies are growing. There is now a global consensus that we urgently need to address the anthropogenic share of climate change.
The success of emission reductions depends to a large extent on the voluntary and consistent actions of the business community in industrialised countries. Thus, we at HPC AG are prepared to take joint responsibility for the world we leave to our children and grandchildren.
For this reason, we had the greenhouse gas emissions caused by our company in 2019 assessed by Fokus Zukunft GmbH & Co. KG. Our carbon footprint in Germany is approximately 1,900 tonnes of CO2 equivalent pollutants per year, or – calculated in full-time equivalents – around 5.3 tonnes per employee.
We have decided to offset these emissions by purchasing a total of 3,800 climate certificates for 2020 and 2021. With these certificates, we are supporting a hydroelectric power generation project in Uganda that has been certified by the United Nations.
Greenhouse gases are evenly distributed in the atmosphere. We chose a project in Uganda because it makes sense to avoid emissions where it is most cost effective. For the years 2022 and 2023, we are supporting two further projects with the purchase of 3,200 climate certificates. One is a water treatment project in Sierra Leona and the other is a project in Chile involving a run-of-river hydroelectric power plant. In addition, projects in emerging and developing countries contribute to improving the economic, social and ecological situation there as well as support the realisation of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
For emerging and developing countries, emissions trading is an essential driver for the transfer to clean technologies and sustainable economic development.
By purchasing a total of 7,000 climate certificates, our company became climate neutral for the years 2020 – 2023. For this compensation, we have received an award for being a climate-neutral company. This makes HPC AG one of the first in our industry to voluntarily offset its emissions under the Clean Development Mechanism.
