Contaminated Building Material Remediation

It is likely that every building constructed in the 20th century contains building pollutants, i.e., hazardous substances as defined by the Hazardous Substances Ordinance. This does not necessarily mean that renovation is required. For example, bonded asbestos products and artificial mineral fibers classified as carcinogenic, known as old artificial mineral fibers (KMF). Remediation is required for building pollutants in the event of demolition, during handling, such as during renovations, after accidents caused by improper handling of asbestos, or in the event of an intolerable risk to users or third parties. We can help you assess the need for remediation.

Environmental Compatibility Assessment

The environmental impact assessment is the central environmental policy instrument for environmental precaution. Environmentally relevant projects are assessed for their environmental impact. As part of the official approval procedure, the environmental impact assessment is part of the decision-making process on the admissibility of projects. It is the first hurdle for project implementation. Federal Immission Control Act of Germany: The HPC as translator

In the early 1970s, the German Federal Government presented its first environmental programme. The Federal Immission Control Act is intended to protect against harmful effects on the environment. And so, since then, many companies have come into contact with the law again and again. The example of the Hagedorn Group of Companies illustrates how HPC AG supports its customers in the authorisation process.

FFH Compatability Assessment/Natura 2000

The conservation of our natural habitats is of central importance for biodiversity and climate protection. We ensure that projects are compatible with the Habitats Directive by taking into account the requirements of the Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora (Habitats Directive).

Fire Protection

Heavy Rain and Flash Floods, Flood Protection

HPC and the IQ Towers of Hamburg’s HafenCity

Anyone visiting the heart of the city of Hamburg, HafenCity (Harbour City), usually looks at the impressive new and old buildings – or at the wide water. But it is also worth taking a look at the ground. Only those who master the skill can build in a harbour – with sand, storm surges and an inrush of water.

Hydraulic Engineerung

Water is the basis of our lives. Rivers and inland waters are the natural habitat for flora and fauna. At the same time, they are traffic and transportation routes and popular areas for leisure and recreation. However, flowing and inland waters also harbor dangers. Flooding can have devastating effects. We preserve natural resources and design them in such a way that they can be used safely.

Hydrogeological Testings and Measurements

We can only protect what we know: Geohydraulic measurements and investigations into groundwater conditions are an important basis for hydrogeological exploration. We use our measuring vehicles to carry out pumping tests and all standard borehole testing methods down to a depth of 400 meters. We record all measurement parameters digitally. We can evaluate the data directly on site. We obtain information about the aquifer structure using the best technical standards: diagnostic plots and transient type curve methods provide reliable aquifer parameters. This enables us to mathematically calculate the groundwater flow and make forecasts on the development of groundwater quality. We investigate groundwater quality using immission pumping tests, multi-level sampling and other methods. This allows us to assess and remediate groundwater damage.

Land Recycling

Lost rivers and the aftermath of war: HPC in Kosovo

There are no rivers in the capital of Kosovo. The Priština, its namesake, and the Vellusha disappeared in the 1950s – filled up with rubbish and soil. Rivers that did not disappear from the face of the earth are often contaminated in the Balkans – as are many soils. The reason: carelessness or negligent and ignorant handling of harmful substances as well as massive damage caused by war.

Materiality Analysis

The materiality analysis is a key tool for identifying the relevant issues for sustainable corporate governance. By focusing on material aspects, we create transparency and promote responsible decision-making.

Mine Decommissioning and Recultivation

The use and design after the end of raw material extraction must be taken into account as early as the development of a deposit. The planning design of the post-mining landscape must ensure long-term safety, aftercare-free and sustainable use of the site after the mining process. When planning, we take into account geotechnical, hydrogeological, technical and landscape planning factors. From this, we develop a complex remediation plan, individually for you.

Mining Deposit Investigation and Evaluation

Deposits are indispensable sources for the continued existence of entire branches of industry. They counteract the scarcity of raw materials. Raw materials are very different – and so are their deposits. The exploration of a deposit is the basis for successful raw material extraction. We offer geological expertise combined with many years of experience and technical exploration services. This guarantees you reliable planning, support and evaluation during exploration.
The evaluation of a deposit by means of a pre-feasibility study and bankable feasibility study in accordance with international standards enables the mining investor to make a well-founded decision about his financial commitment. An important criterion is the evaluation of reserves. Other decision criteria include technical feasibility, ecological and social impact on the environment and legal approval aspects.

Mining Extraction Planning

We use the results of the deposit exploration to develop technical extraction concepts and plan the details of raw material extraction. We prepare approval procedures for the extraction of deposits and support the approval process in an advisory capacity.

Permit Applications and Technical Planning

Site Dewatering Measures

The vision for Kesslergrube: Germany’s ambitious remediation of a polluted area

Ambitious remediation of a polluted area instead of “out of sight, out of mind”. HPC AG is thoroughly remediating a pit filled with chemical and pharmaceutical waste, among other things, using state-of-the-art equipment for the Swiss-based Roche Holding AG. Excavating an average of 600 tonnes per day, and filling a total of 15,000 containers in a very confined space at a depth of 13 metres right next to a river – HPC AG, the general planner and construction manager, has shown that this is possible.

The greenhouse gases caused by HPC AG are recorded and compensated. This makes us one of the first companies in our industry to voluntarily compensate for emissions.

Toxicological Risk Assessment

Contaminated sites and buildings, emissions and immissions endanger product safety and occupational health and safety and reduce the value of products and real estate. Chemical substances must therefore be identified and quantified. Hazards are often not recognizable at first glance. This applies in particular to combined exposures caused by pollutant cocktails.
