It is likely that every building constructed in the 20th century contains building pollutants, i.e., hazardous substances as defined by the Hazardous Substances Ordinance. This does not necessarily mean that renovation is required. For example, bonded asbestos products and artificial mineral fibers classified as carcinogenic, known as old artificial mineral fibers (KMF). Remediation is required for building pollutants in the event of demolition, during handling, such as during renovations, after accidents caused by improper handling of asbestos, or in the event of an intolerable risk to users or third parties. Anyone visiting the heart of the city of Hamburg, HafenCity (Harbour City), usually looks at the impressive new and old buildings – or at the wide water. But it is also worth taking a look at the ground. Only those who master the skill can build in a harbour – with sand, storm surges and an inrush of water.

Water is the basis of our lives. Rivers and inland waters are the natural habitat for flora and fauna. At the same time, they are traffic and transportation routes and popular areas for leisure and recreation. However, flowing and inland waters also harbor dangers. Flooding can have devastating effects. We preserve natural resources and design them in such a way that they can be used safely.

We can only protect what we know: Geohydraulic measurements and investigations into groundwater conditions are an important basis for hydrogeological exploration. We use our measuring vehicles to carry out pumping tests and all standard borehole testing methods down to a depth of 400 meters. We record all measurement parameters digitally. We can evaluate the data directly on site. We obtain information about the aquifer structure using the best technical standards: diagnostic plots and transient type curve methods provide reliable aquifer parameters. This enables us to mathematically calculate the groundwater flow and make forecasts on the development of groundwater quality. We investigate groundwater quality using immission pumping tests, multi-level sampling and other methods. This allows us to assess and remediate groundwater damage.

There are no rivers in the capital of Kosovo. The Priština, its namesake, and the Vellusha disappeared in the 1950s – filled up with rubbish and soil. Rivers that did not disappear from the face of the earth are often contaminated in the Balkans – as are many soils. The reason: carelessness or negligent and ignorant handling of harmful substances as well as massive damage caused by war.

The materiality analysis is a key tool for identifying the relevant issues for sustainable corporate governance. By focusing on material aspects, we create transparency and promote responsible decision-making.

The use and design after the end of raw material extraction must be taken into account as early as the development of a deposit. The planning design of the post-mining landscape must ensure long-term safety, aftercare-free and sustainable use of the site after the mining process. Ambitious remediation of a polluted area instead of “out of sight, out of mind”. HPC AG is thoroughly remediating a pit filled with chemical and pharmaceutical waste, among other things, using state-of-the-art equipment for the Swiss-based Roche Holding AG. Excavating an average of 600 tonnes per day, and filling a total of 15,000 containers in a very confined space at a depth of 13 metres right next to a river – HPC AG, the general planner and construction manager, has shown that this is possible.

The greenhouse gases caused by HPC AG are recorded and compensated. This makes us one of the first companies in our industry to voluntarily compensate for emissions.
